Sail Away Ladies is a Sea Shanty, sometimes people think of Sea Shanties as the songs sailors sang on the old sailing vessels while they were doing there work, those were referred to as work songs, no instruments, just men singing while they worked because it made the heavy labor easier if they pulled together [heavy ho] to the beat of the song sung. Sea Shanties were more party type songs. On shore, the men who were lucky, and maybe a bit good looking would meet a woman in a tavern and bring her back aboard the ship where someone with a fiddle, a guitar, etc. would strike up a tune and they would sing Sea Shanties long into the night. Sail Away Ladies refers to Tennessee and St. Louis, so the sailing ships that this song was sung on probably sailed the eastern seaboard of America.
